The Red ring of death

Talk about the crazy, yet elusive world of gaming.

I consider myself to be fairly lucky as far as my purchase of my 360 goes. Up until now it, aside from being perpetually stuck on the date November 22nd, it has run perfectly. So I was rather surprised when it suddenly keeled over in the middle of an intense Halo 1 match.

Recently my Xbox got lost in the refuse and clutter that makes up my bedroom and so I decided I'd try that good ol' backwards compatibility that the 360 claims to possess. I plop in my old copy of Halo 1 into the disk drive and play a single game of snipers against my friend. Everything was going fine, and by that I mean I was kicking his ass, when suddenly the damned device decided life wasn't worth living anymore, and then shot itself in the face right before emptying its bowels full of disappointment and nerd rage onto me and my compatriot.

This may be only the first time it has happened to me but I know a great deal of people that are already one their third or forth console. You'd think that by now someone at that gigantic, lumbering, corporation Microsoft could of figured out why the little scrotes are always collapsing from apparent exhaustion, but after three freaking years the best response you can get from an official source is along the lines of, "fuck if I know."

Out of all the consoles the 360 is by far my favorite, but one has to ask why they seem so fragile? If anyone has any theories or just feels like sharing their tales of misfortune, please contribute to the conversation.

Im on my second one, and instead of freaking out, I moved onto something else for the 2 weeks it took to get a new one for free. Im actaully glad that my Xbox died because I started working out. I went from 119 lbs to 140 lbs. But on a serious note, Microsoft knows about this problem and extended the warranty for 3 years. They have implemented smaller CPUs and pretty soon GPUs, with that the overheating will be less likely. But hey, in 2010 we will get the Xbox 720 and the PS4.

I'm still holding my breath for the Atari 10000.

I suppose the red ring doesn't matter that much anyway. I only play my 360 when I have some spare time, which I don't usually.

Mine died about two months ago, sent it out and after lots of drama got it back three weeks later. The reason the red rings occur is due to overheating. The 360 uses lead-free solder, because they want to save the whales. Basically what this does is that since the lead-free is weaker, after repeated uses of getting extremely hot then quickly cooling down the solder becomes brittle. This causes issues with the heat sink, thus overheating occurs and you have the three rings of death. Foolish move on Microsoft's part for not properly testing the 360 and finding this issue, but they have acted properly by extending the warranty. Xbox support agents are joke, they are clueless.

and im sure that by kicking my ass you mean that we werent even 30 seconds into that game when you and my brother picked up the overshield and camo at the same time, the combination of which destroyed the many souls that power the xbox 360.

I got the red rings again and awaiting my replacement, I should receive it by Friday. To be honest I am rather impressed on how fast the turn-around as of late, I sent it to them and they only had it for three days and it was on its way back. Though I was without it for two weeks, I did gain from it, I complained about it and they sent me Viva Pinata for free. I've always meant to get the game, but never really got around to it, now I have it. Nonetheless, that does not excuse them for not fixing this issue with the replacements they send you. It seems counter-productive to send out a product that is just as defective as the ones causing the issue. Fun times.
